Why Essentials Oils Will Always be a Necessity for My Family

I was first introduced to essential oils by a really good friend on a day everyone in my entire household felt like DEATH. I was a teacher for about three years and if you work in education, I know you can relate to what I’m about to share. All it takes is one kiddo with a little bug to spark a wave of sickness that ends up traveling throughout the building among both teachers and students. Well, that’s exactly what happened to both me and my daughter, who was attending the school I worked at.

Stomach Flu was making its nasty little way around school for the second time within the span of about three months. I caught it first and basically quarantined myself from my family for about seven days. During the second school outbreak, Spencer caught the bug. She was fairly small at the time. You know little ones love to cuddle, even more so when their under the weather. And, of course us mamas want nothing more than for our babies to be as comfortable as possible.

I wasn’t surprised that I caught it after Spencer got sick but, I just couldn’t fathom the thought of being sick for another seven to ten days AGAIN. Spencer and I were both lying in bed looking like Zombie Thing 1 and Zombie Thing 2 when I got a text from my friend, Stephanie. She was just checking in to say hello and see how I was doing. I told her how Spencer and I were keeping each other company while we died a slow death from the stomach flu together. She told me that she had something she thought I should try and began to tell me about she had been using essential oils.

Steph told me that since we were already sick, using the oils wouldn’t make the symptoms go away immediately. But, at the very least they would shorten the amount of time we were sick and lessen the intensity of the symptoms we were experiencing.

Even though I knew I could trust Steph with my life and wellbeing…To be completely honest, if the clown from It was peeking out of a gutter and told me the same thing, the way I felt at that exact moment, I would’ve hopped down in that gutter without giving it a second thought. You know exactly what I’m talking about. You know you’ve been seeing that meme floating around a lot lately. I was willing to try anything.

I mustered up enough strength to make the 30 minute drive to Steph’s house. Stephanie is one of the most generous people I have ever met. By the time I made it to her house she had a Ziplock bag full of items ready for me. There were several unopened full size bottles, small sample sizes, as well as blends of oils she personally put together for me. She gave me instructions on how I should use the oils and sent me on my way. I put those bad boys to use as soon as I got back home.

There are several different ways to use oils and I was doing the absolute most (Don’t worry, I got you. Blog post coming soon). I was using a diffuser to disperse oil into the air, applying them directly to mine and Spencer’s body and I even added some to water that I drank.

Spencer recovered the quickest but I kept her home just to be on the safe side.

Side note: As a former educator, I feel compelled to say this. Parents, if you know you’re little one is sick, like really sick, don’t send him or her to school. I understand the dilemma of not wanting to miss work. But, knowingly choosing to send your sick child to school means that you’re also willingly choosing to be the cause of a ripple effect of events for everyone that comes in contact with your child at school.

Too soon, don't do it! Reconsider, read some liter-ature on the subject.

My rant is over. Back to the regularly scheduled program.

Three days later, I felt like a new woman. Needless to say, my first experience with essential oils made a lasting impression on me. My mama, who also caught the stomach flu from Spencer, flat out refused to try the essential oils. A few days later, she begged me to show her how to use them. To this day, she won’t openly admit that they work but at the first sign of a cold or when her muscles are sore, homegirl asks me to break out the good stuff; my oils.

For all my parents who may have felt some type of way about my side note, consider using essential oils as a way to prevent your child from getting sick. That is one of the key reasons I love essential oils so much. There’s an essential oil for practically any ailment the body could potentially experience.

There so many different ways that I benefit from by incorporating essential oils into my daily life. My skincare routine. Cooking. During meditation. Cleaning. Detoxing. Bug repellent. Lowering Spencer’s fever. AND THEY’RE ALL NATURAL!

I choose to use essential oils as preventative aids and an alternative form of healing. Don’t get me wrong, while essential oils are amazing, there is definitely a need for modern medicine in some cases. Before you consider using essential oils, do some research for yourself. There are oils that shouldn’t be used on children of a certain age, as well as oils that shouldn’t be used by people with certain health conditions.

Later this month, I will be sharing my go-to oils for cold and flu season. And, from time to time I will share my favorite oils or new oils I have tried.

If you use essential oils, I would love to hear what your favorites are and how you use them. Let me know in the comments below.

Love you, mean it.
