Redefine Your Happiness is a collaborative social media campaign started by mental health advocates, Cherina Darrell-Sutherland (www.cherinahonestly.com / @cherinahonestly) and Juanita (halffullnotempty.org / @hfne_). I had the pleasure of being featured as one of 18 social influencers who want to change the narrative and share their thoughts & ideas on happiness. Here's what I had to say.
Happiness, in my opinion, is a combination of...
...Many different things to many different people. I feel it when I watch my daughter do things I didn’t have the opportunity to do as a child. Having my brother’s family and our cousins over on Friday or Saturday night, like our parents did when we were kids. Singing along with Beyoncé in my car. Climbing my grown behind in bed with my mama and us making each other laugh or cry from time to time.
What do you do regularly to contribute to your overall wellbeing?
I meditate and attend group meditation once a week. I try to walk for 30 minutes at least three times a week but sometimes it doesn’t happen. I also attend therapy twice a month.
What habits do you have to ensure your happiness?
Finding something to be grateful for every day, no matter what. I don’t remember feeling true happiness, as an adult, before I started keeping a gratitude journal. I spend time alone at least once a week doing something that I enjoy. I tell people no when I truly don’t want to do something. One of the biggest keys to my happiness is always having a creative outlet and the ability to learn something new on a regular basis.
